How to Measure for a Fireplace Mantel
To get the perfect fit, follow these steps:
1. Measure the Width of the Fireplace
• Use a tape measure to find the total width of the fireplace surround (stone, tile, brick, etc.).
• Decide how much overhang you want on each side (usually 2–6 inches).
➤ Example: If your surround is 60”, and you want a 3” overhang on each side, you’d order a mantel that’s 66” wide.
How to Measure the Depth
• You should have at least 6 inched projecting from the wall.
• ****If you are going to use stone on your fireplace mantel make sure to include the extra depth to ensure your mantel is out from the stone at least 6 inches. The stone is usually 1-2inches
➤ Example: If the stone projects 6”, you might want a mantel that’s 8–9” deep.
